In this episode of Foodloose, I’m inviting you to hang out with me and my friend Drew Smethurst, an SFX engineer who’s spent years making crazy things happen in front of the camera.

We talk about how racing old V8 cars somehow led him into the film industry, building rigs, solving seemingly impossible shots, and the good old days of shooting high-speed commercials on film.

We also get into how much our industry has changed, from having days to experiment with crazy ideas to today’s tight schedules and budgets. And of course, we talk about AI, real physics, and whether practical effects are going anywhere.

 We met between shoots in Milan, slightly tired, but it was great to hear how tabletop SFX was starting to take shape until now. 

He started in the theatre in 1997 when no one knew special effects for food. He invented rigs, but there were no directions on how to show food in an interesting way, differently, with effects. 

A great field of improvisation where throwing, smashing, and making mistakes was the only way to perfection in tabletop shots. Enjoy.

Julian Hermannsen is one of the best motion control robot operators in the world, he has worked on many Hollywood productions, and is also a very creative support for table top advertisers. I have had the pleasure of working with Julian many times, and I have seen how he works and how precisely he approaches each film. What’s interesting about his work? Explosions, throwing objects and trying to shoot them with incredible speed, moving the robot to the maximum on tracks, showing the world differently than we see it during normal camera movements. I invite you to the world that doesn’t’ exist.
